A Guide To Wedding Event Style And Decor

A Guide To Wedding Event Style And Decor

You have sent the invitations out, chosen your dream venue and even have options for a dress, but have you thought about the wedding décor and wedding event style? You can’t expect the venue team to handle it all, at least without some knowledge of your taste.

No wedding is complete without wedding decorations. But it is not as easy as you might think. To achieve the perfect look takes hard work and thought. The right decorations can turn your special wedding event style into the magical celebration that will have your guests talking for years to come.

Good thing, as an wedding planner we are here to help. We have taken it upon ourselves to give you the Do’s and Don’ts of wedding décor ideas and wedding event style

THE DON’TS

Don’t overdo the wedding decorations

A lot of people tend to go a little over the top with decorations. They might go online, gather up too many ideas and when the day is close, realise they have an abundance of decorations. We know you are excited about the wedding but too many decorations can look chaotic.

For example, you might have been spoilt for choice with centrepieces and decide to put two or three on each table. But this is a big no-no. Where will your guests eat?

While on the subject of centrepieces, there is no need to get too extravagant here either. Simple decorations like flowers in glass jars works well. Plus, when your guests start flooding the room, the room will feel full and cramped if you have gone too heavy on decorations.

Focus on decorating a few sections of the room and venue, such as the entrance, aisle and reception, and decorate other spaces meagrely. You would be familiar with the term ‘less is more’. Definitely stick to less is more in the case of wedding decorations.

Don’t forget about your wedding event lighting

Whether your wedding is an indoor or outdoor one, you still need to consider your lighting. It will make your decorations all the more stunning. Do not forget to include lighting in areas that require it. While lighting is not normally taken into account when it comes to wedding décor it plays a huge role. Take advantage of candles, lamps, chandeliers and even fairy lights.

Light up that first dance with your partner while cameras capture your happiness and love. And you can always dim the lights after and before you enter the venue as a married couple.

Don’t try to match all wedding decorations

Take an example: your theme is pink. You have pink flowers, pink chair covers, pink centrepieces and even pink cutlery. Your guests will think they are going to a little girl’s first birthday party or baby girl reveal at a shower rather than a wedding. There is no need to match everything.

Of course, it is necessary that your colours don’t clash or that you don’t have too many colours, but your colours should complement each other. Keep it tasteful by adding splashes of colours. Your colour theme is important so choose colours that not only give it a magical touch but that reflect your taste.

Don’t replicate a garden

Yes, you must have flowers at your wedding, but you do not want to turn it into a garden. You want your other decorations to dazzle too. Plus, you should try arranging your flowers to ensure they go well together. There is a fine line between stylish and scruffy with blooms. And make sure the types of flowers you choose do not have strong scents. You don’t want your guests sneezing uncontrollably.

Don’t use all the same centrepieces

While some consistency is a good thing, not everything has to be uniform. Play around with your centrepieces. While it is not a good idea to put more than one centrepiece on one table, you can always choose two or three different types and scatter them around the room. Having just one type of centrepiece sounds a bit dull.

THE DO’S

Now that you know not what to do, let’s take a look at what you should be doing.

Do be creative in wedding style

It is your wedding day, so you want it to reflect you. A lot of people tend to go along with the standard decorations – bride and groom cake topper, flowers at the altar or arch and place cards on the tables. Bring your own touch of uniqueness to your big event. For example, perhaps use tiny flags instead of place cards. And instead of normal lights use fairy lights and paper lanterns.

Do set your own wedding event style and decor

Who says you have to have a nice buffet at your wedding, or even a traditional wedding cake? It is your big day! So, if you are not a fan of cake perhaps opt for cheesecake or even ice-cream. And to take the rule breaking even further, you could have burgers or sliders and pizza for your wedding meal.

Do use the wedding venue to your advantage

You might think that outdoor weddings limit your options for decorations, but it can actually open more doors. You can design your own alter or arch and have fun with your decorations. If you are having a beach wedding, you could put your place cards in small glass bottles and have blue as your theme.

If you are having a garden wedding, you can take advantage of the greenery. Add fairy lights to the bushes and release paper lanterns into the sky.

Do stick to your wedding event budget

You don’t have a large budget for your decorations? There is no need to worry. Talk with wedding event pros and be honest about your budget so that you can create something beautiful with the amount of money you are able to spend.

Do get help from the pros
